High Maintenance Children
"Token Reinforcement"

Token reinforcement is an effective means of managing the behavior of children who do not respond well to naturally occurring reinforcers. Token reinforcement requires less time than continuous approval.

  1. Choose the behavior that you want to change. For example: "Do it the first time you are told" or "don't argue".

  2. Choose tokens. They should be:
    • easily dispersed
    • readily understood by the child
    • easily transportable-distinctive for each child

Tangibles - stars, balloons, tickets, trinkets, certificates, poker chips, dimes, Dollar store toys, puzzles, bumper stickers, stickers, hobby trinkets, pencils, notebooks, paper, rubber stamps, baseball cards and other trading cards, rings, checks on a chart, hole punches on a card, plastic chips, toys, etc.

Social Reinforcers - smiles, nods, hugs, certificate of merit, positive comments, standing ovations, applause, pats on the back, gestures, compliments, winks, eye contact, smiling faces, stickers, mysterious "warm fuzzy" notes, etc.

  1. Choose rewards to exchange for tokens:
    • several choices
    • inexpensive but imaginative
    • change them often
    • ask child for suggestions

Privileges - lunch with mom/dad, party, computer time, store coupon good for two, theater tickets to a two dollar movie, story time, discount coupons cook, work in office , rent a movie, have a friend over, go to grandmas, take pictures, play games, magic tricks, do art work, take or CD's, paint, stay up extra half hour.

  1. Let the child know exactly what is expected of him or her to win tokens:
    • write rules on separate cards for child
    • verbally state the rules often
    • practice once

  2. Tell the child how many tokens he will receive for the desired behavior and list on a chart. Examples are included.

  3. Tell the child how many tokens he will to exchange for each activity and list on the chart. Suggestion- In the beginning set the price low, so the child will have many chances to succeed. Gradually increase the prices.

  4. Always pair the awarding of tokens with verbal praise.

  5. If possible have a predetermined time each day when tokens are exchanged for back-up reinforcers.

  6. Keep your own records of tokens earned as well as records or tokens for rewards.

  7. Do not take away reinforcers. Use time out for negative behavior.
